Watches were originally invented in the late 1800's by Patek Philippe. Prior to the early 1900's watches were considered a woman's accessory. Alberto Santos-Dumont, asked Louis Cartier for a watch in the early 1900's. Dumont a famous Brazilian inventor was in the process of building an airplane, and he often had problems with accessing the correct time. Watches had their beginning as an item used by both genders as Louis Cartier gave Dumont an early version of today's watches which Dumont used for a very long time. Cartier then began to sell these watches to other men.
Several people eventually caught on to the fact that Louis Cartier was having a lot of success making watches and started to make replica watches. These watches were similar to what Cartier made with leather wrist bands. The replica watches eventually went on to establish their own brand names and their own identities such as Rolex and Movado. Originally, the replica watch business was booming. Watches brand new, and as a result consumers had no idea that the companies had copied Cartier in order to product the replica watches. In fact most consumers had no idea that the replica watch had originated from Cartier and that officers in the military had ultimately become the main reason for mass scale production of watches.
Today, watches are worn by a lot of men, and in some ways, watches are considered more masculine.
